This will be the 7th Equity Challenge hosted by United Way of Greater New Haven and will focus on raising awareness about disabilities – both the visible and often invisible disabilities that our community, neighbors, colleagues, and families face on a daily basis. It will also be a space to highlight initiatives that address and celebrate the diverse spectrum of identities and abilities that make us who we are.

Read, Listen, and Watch five days of eye-opening and inspiring resources delivered to your email inbox. The content should take around 10-15 minutes a day to explore. Each themed day will include Actions that you can take to further cultivate awareness and possible change.

The Challenge will be kicked off with a LIVE webinar on Wednesday, January 22nd featuring a panel of local disability advocates and leaders sharing their experiences in building a more equitable community. More details to come!

What is the Equity Challenge?

The Equity Challenge is a commitment to devote 10-15 minutes a day for 5 days to learn about the foundations of racism and the different ways that bias, privilege, oppression, and trauma show up in our everyday lives. With this deeper understanding of foundations of racism and how it shapes different people’s lived experiences, we can do our part to make positive change in our community. The Equity Challenge can be an impactful journey for everyone – no matter where you come from or how you identify yourself.

How Did it Begin?

The Equity Challenge was originally developed by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., Dr. Marguerite Penick-Parks, and Debby Irving and was adapted by Food Solutions New England.  From there, it was made available to other organizations, including the United Way of Washtenaw County, from whom we received supportive guidance in designing our own Challenge. We offer the Equity Challenge, adapted for our community, as an important part of our commitment to build an equitable community for all.

How Does it Work?

Every morning of the 5-day Challenge, you’ll receive an email prompt with readings, videos, or podcasts that last 10-15 minutes.  If you choose, you can share your reflections and “Aha!” moments using the hashtags #unitedforequity and #uwgnhequitychallenge and tagging us @UnitedWayofGreaterNewHaven.
