Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed

Many of our neighbors do not have the income to pay for necessities – even though they may work multiple jobs.

United Way describes households facing these challenges with the acronym,  ALICE - Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed - representing the growing number of single adults and families who earn less than the basic costs of living (below the ALICE Threshold).

In Greater New Haven, 43% of household fall below the ALICE threshold, and in the City of New Haven it's 60% of households. This means that their wages fall below the basic cost of living - necessities like food, housing, transportation, health care, and child care.

ALICE households are working hard to survive, but experience extreme challenges daily by systems that are not set up for their success. Improving conditions for ALICE families fuels economic growth, benefiting all households, communities and businesses in the state. Together, we can create communities where all of our neighbors have the opportunity to thrive.
