LITERACY
Literacy tutors undergo a short training focused on the structure of the program, conduct
policies with students, and note-taking - there are options for virtual and in person trainings.
This training can take from 30-60 minutes. Optional topic-specific training sessions are
provided throughout the year.
MATH
Tutors must complete three self-guided virtual training sessions. Each session is intended to be
20 minutes of training with a brief quiz at the conclusion of the training session. The training
sessions focus on: 1) the structure of the program; 2) the 8 mathematical practices in action;
and 3) math mastery tracking systems.
LITERACY
Tutors are required to commit to one or two 1-hour sessions per week.
MATH
Tutors are required to commit to a minimum of one 1-hour session per week.
LITERACY
Summer: Literacy tutoring hours during the summer will occur Monday-Friday and Saturdays
and time slots vary due to programming differences in each organization.
School Year: tutoring will occur Monday-Friday between 3-7pm and Saturdays between
10-4pm (again depending on each organization’s programming schedule).
MATH
Summer: Tutoring will take place Monday - Friday (2 pm - 6 pm) at locations still being
confirmed.
School Year: Tutoring will take place Monday - Friday (1 pm - 4 pm) at East Rock School and
additional locations
At this time, we are collecting preferences, however, we cannot promise there will be space within
your availability at your selected organization.
As a tutor, we do ask for consistency when working with the kids. We ask that you select a day and
time that you can attend without too many interruptions. That being said, if you have any changes in
your schedule, please provide at least 2 weeks' notice so that a substitute or replacement can be
found. There is a child behind every hour that needs our help.
This will depend on each organization’s structure, however most programs will be in person.

MATH: At New Haven Counts, both in-person and virtual tutoring occurs. The majority of our sessions
are in person
