Volunteering with Board and Chair Members!

United Way of Greater New Haven kicked off the first annual Days of Action Monday, June 22, and I wanted to go out and see first hand the amazing work that was being done around Greater New Haven. To my surprise and delight, I was able  to work along side 2 board members and our campaign chair!

The first project I attended was a clean up and landscaping opportunity at the American Red Cross on Whitney Ave. There, the Carmondy and Torrance employees were working hard pulling weeds, putting down mulch and cleaning up the grounds in general. Tom Sansone, partner at the firm and a valued board member of United Way was also there helping out. It was a wonderful day, free of rain and full of good will.

The next project I visited was a painting project at Christian Community Action/Stepping Stone, on Winchester Ave. Stepping Stone is a comprehensive transitional housing program, where residents may stay for up to 24 months. Families throughout the Greater New Haven area, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness are eligible for the Stepping Stone program. The goal of the program is to offer families case management services in a safe, supportive environment that will foster the growth and increase the self-sufficiency of each family member.

To my surprise, I was greeted by another board member. Jonathan Holloway, professor at Yale, and his wife were hard at work by the time I showed up. The small group of people who were with him were able to paint an entire 2 bedroom apartment, that will now be ready for a family to move in 2 days early. Later that afternoon, Diane Turner, the 2009 campaign chair for United Way joined us in the rest of the painting. Diane's energy and postive attitude helped everyone finish the task on a great note.

The day was very exciting and fulfilling, and I was happy that so many prominent community members value community service and volunteering. It was very inspiring to see all of the hard work and completed projects that were accomplished on our first day. It was such a great start to a week full of giving back and supporting our city!
